Day 12 Visiting the Che Family Temple

Day 12 Visiting the Chen Family Temple

Today we went to see the Chen Family Temple.  It was built as a means for family members to have a place to come and study and be able to take the Provincial exam.  Now it’s a museum  housing examples of amazing embroidery and furniture.  Also it has artists who make scroll paintings using nothing but black paint and their hands.

The grounds were changed for the Asian games.  A school was moved and a park built all around the temple which is one of the top attractions for locals and tourists alike.

The detail in the roof is amazing.

One of the huge doors featuring a warrior God which keeps evil away.

Guy painting using his hands as a “brush.” Our guide Helen is watching.

John and Maggie always have fun together!

After the temple visit we went to the Government Store.  Quality is assured at the government store.  We bought our tea set there since we plan to use it.  Things are more expensive but we felt worth it for some things, especially things we eat off of.  We also got Maggie a chop, which is essentially a stamp with her name written in Chinese and English.

We ate dinner at Starbucks.  We are fortunate to have an amazing breakfast buffet each morning at the White Swan Hotel but then it is a hunt for American food or dishes we can eat.  We’ve had families all around us go “down” with vomiting and diarrhea but so far we have escaped! We have ordered Papa Johns many times and McDonalds too and I’m pretty done with that.  Starbucks had sandwiches so we enjoyed those.  Their turkey sandwich was made with jelly, different but totally good, their tuna sandwich was a bit too fishy for Matt to deal with so I took a stab at it.  Got half down.
